BOPLA bio-based biodegradable logistics tape is engineered from polylactic acid. Sourced from bio-based materials, it achieves true compostability and biodegradability. The product balances high tensile strength with superior adhesion and has earned national green certification. Currently deployed at scale across most express delivery networks, it provides a cost-effective solution for industrial plastic reduction and the advancement of sustainable logistics.

Product Description: Bio-based Biodegradable Compostable BOPLA Tape Film

BiONLY® is a bio-based and biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) film made using an advanced version of biaxial orientation technology, which increases the film's strength, clarity and processing stability. It was developed as a sustainable replacement for traditional BOPP films, in order to provide a film which will meet the technical needs of the printability and adhesive coating of standard carton sealing tapes.

BiONLY® has surface properties that are optimised and mechanical properties that are well-balanced; therefore, it is capable of performing at a very efficient level in terms of ink adhesion, corona treatments and pressure-sensitive adhesive coatings. BiONLY® biaxially oriented polylactic acid film provides reliable tensile strengths and stable dimensions, thereby allowing for a smooth converting process, as well as providing a consistent quality of tape. BiONLY® also provides excellent clarity and gloss, which allows for high-quality branding and printed graphics used in the retail and logistics areas.

One of the main advantages of BiONLY® biaxially oriented polylactic acid film is its compatibility with existing BOPP tape production lines. Therefore, manufacturers can use their present equipment to produce this biodegradable BOPLA film without the need for major modifications; this means there will be little to no additional capital expenditure or disruption to normal operations. As a result, manufacturers can easily switch from their traditional fossil-based BOPP tapes to a sustainable BOPLA tape depending upon market demand, customer needs or local environmental regulations.

By selecting BiONLY®, tape manufacturers can decrease their dependence upon petroleum-based products while maintaining their ability to maintain their production efficiencies, product performance and costs. In conclusion, by utilising BiONLY® biaxially oriented polylactic acid film, manufacturers will have a low-carbon packaging solution that will allow them to achieve their sustainable development objectives without limiting their operational flexibility.

Success Story: BOPLA Film for Sustainable Packaging Tapes

biaxially oriented polylactic acid film

One of Europe's largest manufacturers of packaging tapes that are used by e-commerce and logistics companies was facing increasing demands to develop sustainable solutions in response to rising pressures to reduce plastic waste and carbon emissions. Several of their major customers have made commitments to replace fossil-based packaging products with renewable or biodegradable alternatives by 2030. As a result, the manufacturer's traditional BOPP carton sealing tapes did not meet those sustainability objectives.

The manufacturer needed a solution that would:

* Reduce the carbon footprint of the product
* Preserve the high tensile strength and sealing performance of the product
* Function on the same BOPP production lines being used
* Maintain the print quality on branded tapes
* Comply with EU standards for compostability

Technical Key Advantages:

* High tensile strength, allowing for effective carton sealing
* Stiffness and dimensional stability similar to BOPP film
* Ink adhesion after corona treatment is very good
* Adhesive bonding to both solvent-based and water-based adhesives is reliable
* Compatible with all existing BOPP tape manufacturing equipment; therefore, no costly machinery upgrades were required. Users could simply alternate between traditional BOPP film and BOPLA film based on customer orders for maximum flexibility.

Results & Performance Outcomes

1️⃣ Sustainable Impact

Due to the fact that the new BOPLA-based tape uses substantially less fossil plastics than previous versions of the product, and since biaxially oriented polylactic acid film is produced from renewable plant sources, the product is also better positioned to support lower carbon footprint targets. Ultimately, the tape itself (the film + certified adhesive) meets the necessary industrial compostability standards required in several major European markets where the customers of the manufacturer operate.

2️⃣ Operational Efficiency

There were no significant decreases in productivity due to the introduction of the BOPLA-based tape. There was minimal loss in production speed during coating and slitting processes. The scrap rate of the BOPLA-based tape was identical to that of traditional BOPP tape manufacturing.

3️⃣ Market Differentiation

The biodegradable nature of the carton sealing tape generated interest among a number of customers who identify as green/sustainable-focused, including:

* Online retailers
* Brands that sell organic products
* Logistics companies that focus on environmental responsibility

In the first year of production, the manufacturer signed long-term agreements with two sustainable packaging distributors.

4️⃣ Branding & Print Quality

The BOPLA film retained the high transparency and gloss characteristics that allow for clear presentation of premium printed logos and messaging, including:

* Compostable Tape
* Bio-Based Packaging
* Certification of sustainability efforts

The ability to enhance the brand image of end-users is a benefit of this feature.
